The People Versus Lenny Bruce
About the Show
In April 1964, comedian Lenny Bruce was arrested for obscenity after performing at the Cafe Au Go Go in Greenwich Village, with undercover detectives in the audience. What followed was a widely publicized six-month trial that became a landmark case in the history of free speech. This theatrical adaptation by Susan Charlotte dramatizes the story of Bruce and his legendary first-amendment lawyer Martin Garbus, who tried to save his client from the system and from himself, enlisting journalist Dorothy Kilgallen and cartoonist Jules Feiffer to testify in Bruce's defense.
Directed by Antony Marsellis, the cast features Johnny Anthony as Lenny Bruce, Stephen Schnetzer as Martin Garbus/Narrator, Dan Grimaldi (The Sopranos) as Richard H. Kuh, Ian Lithgow as Herbert Ruhe, Timothy Doyle as Jules Feiffer, and Roberta Wallach as Dorothy Kilgallen. The People Versus Lenny Bruce is part of All the Courts a Stage, a series of plays based on the legal cases of Martin Garbus. Produced by Cause Celebre Productions at Theatre Row.
