Clara: Sex, Love and Classical Music
About the Show
No, not Robert Schumann. Clara Schumann. Created and performed by Elena Mazzon, this intimate solo play explores the fascinating and complex life of Clara Schumann, the Romantic era pianist, composer, and feminist icon who was considered one of the greatest virtuosos of her time. As Clara gets ready for a date with the famous Johannes Brahms, she turns her relationships and life inside out, tackling questions of identity, ambition, motherhood, and desire that feel strikingly contemporary. The production incorporates live piano performance throughout, with Mazzon playing selections from the works of Clara Schumann, Robert Schumann, and Brahms.
Produced by LPMAM and Face to Face and directed by Catriona Kerridge, the show has earned five-star acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe and international tours. Fest Mag praised Mazzon's performance as "compelling, extraordinary, iconic," while London Theatre Reviews called her "superb as Clara." The radio-play version was long-listed for the 61st Grammy Awards in the Spoken Word category. Presented at 59E59 Theaters as part of the Brits Off Broadway festival. Recommended ages 14+.
